APW - Elgin, Convertible model, 21J, Grade 72, 16S, very heavy 14K gold original HC, front and rear with distinctive raised lip demarcating attractively engraved perimeter from engine turned central portion, band with a distinctive angular contour with sharp edge around its midpoint, gold cuvette, white glass-enamel DS dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, raised gold jewel settings, gold train wheels, gold balance screws, attractive nickel damascene, s#607339. Comes with an associated wooden fitted Elgin marked box. Gross weight of assembled watch 90.5 dwt (140.8 g). A beautiful example of Elgin's top quality watch in a spectacular heavy gold case. A single run of 1000 serial numbers spanning 607001 to 608000 was blocked for Grade 72 production but based on known examples we believe the actual production was only approximately 450 made, as all examples we have observed have fallen neatly within only the 607001 to 607450 portion of this run. This indicates the likelihood that a bit over half of the blocked serial number range was never completed.
CONDITION:
Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, bright lustrous surfaces, short scratches toward left side of train bridge with small area of surrounding surface rub, small surface spot between escape wheel jewel setting and fourth wheel jewel setting, few small bits of oxide to central polished steel setting wheel; dial with outer chapter hl along edge near 2, light outer chapter hl at 7, light hl above seconds-register; fine hands, hour and minute are plum colored, seconds-hand is blue; case shows hardly any wear, no dents or dings, superb engraving and engine turning detail; tight bow, crown shows hardly any wear; good glass crystal. Box in excellent cosmetic condition overall with some typical exterior scratches and abrasions.
